How to Overcome Fear in an Increasingly Scary World

Lorra Fae Wildfire of Passion School will inspire you to overcome fear and motivate yourself to be fulfilled in an increasingly scary world

The crumbling of this world lately is heavy on my heart.

I know society has always been this horrible. Killing people for stupid reasons – things that don’t matter. It’s so easy to be hateful.

Now these horrors are more close to home, impossible to ignore – though we continue to be distracted in order to cope, to pretend that we are safe, that we are immortal, that time for our physical bodies is never-ending.

And then wham! We are dead. We are old, feeble, destitute. We lament our wasted days, the moments we gave to useless garbage. Those are completely irretrievable – they are lost and ancient relics, not worthy of a written history, not worth calling “memories” at all, because they’re hollow – shells containing nothing at all.

I see people as conduits for astonishing beauty and discoveries – but humans on the whole seem to be a despicable species. We really have to fight our abhorrent natures to be luminaries. For some the fight is harder than for others. Some lose the war entirely, and cause more wars themselves.

We start out as beacons of hope, and for so many of us it is thwarted by other people, incidents that cause us to shatter, and the heaviness of everything going on in the world. These things drain us, jade us, and often turn us into dust.

Our lives are so fragile and easy to destroy.

Do we want an inner fire that is just an ember, so simple to smother? Or a wildfire impossible to put out?

If our bodies are killed, will we live on? Will everything inside us that was never released be lost forever? Or will we die EMPTY, having purged ourselves of all the ideas and art and music and beauty and goodness that we contain?

It is never-ending, of course. We can’t stop creating. We can’t stop loving, or doing – unless we are detached and inhuman. Too many of us are husks of our real selves – too many of us ignore those flames. We extinguish them with bullshit, with garbage, with chemicals that make life seem like a chore instead of a journey to our greater selves and the heights we can reach if we take each step of the climb to get there.

It is more important than ever to do what we have always dreamed of.

The reason we are so scared of death, particularly of premature death, is that we will not have the experiences we’ve always wanted, or to create what we’ve kept inside of us for so long. We fear that it’s too late. We fear someone else will take it away from us.

Most of us deny it to OURSELVES. Most of us are killing ourselves slowly, yet we fear someone else doing it to us – it’s happening to almost everyone, all the time. We kill ourselves with “food”, drugs, horrible soul-crushing jobs, alcohol, awful relationships, and every other thing that does not give us true fulfillment.

It is more important than ever to release what we having burning inside us – those things that scorch our souls every day, that we are scared to let out, that we fear will be judged, that we are terrified will fall flat.

The only thing that can be happen if we don’t let it all loose, is that we just exist and not much more.

The body is able to be killed, but the essence of who we are cannot be. The only way we can express ourselves in this universe, as who we are, is through the body we inhabit. This is our chance to do everything we dream of. Other than procreating, that is what a physical body is FOR.

We are not experiencing LIFE as we could be, not experiencing the natural world, the WILD, the essence of being AWAKE and AWARE of the intoxicating elixir of the universe.

Many people will see it through using medicinal plants, but astonishment and wonder are always there, and we can grasp them at any time if we pay attention. We need to listen to the calling of the heart that resides in our GUTS. It is always talking to us.

We need to stop silencing it, weighing it down, distracting it, poisoning it. It needs to be HEARD.

LISTEN.

The inferno within needs to burn and take over our lives. Our world needs visionaries with torrid passion to lead us to our own paths. We need contributions of mad desire, of dedicated obsession, of star-bright wonderment. This path is available to all, at any time – we just have to discover the way. There are no maps. The only guide we have is our own imagination.

It is more important than ever that we do it NOW, because some lunatic could just kill us at any time – a person who chose the wrong fork in the road – someone who never really got to be who they were truly destined to be – that denial of their possible greatness led them to nefarious choices. They could shoot us in the face while we sign autographs. Slaughter us while we dance at a nightclub. Murder us while we are in our car. Mow us down while we celebrate life with others. It’s impossible to know.

Unless you live through an ordeal where you almost lose your life, you may never stop taking life for granted.

Should we wait for these moments? Most people don’t have near-death experiences. Most people are already near death without even realizing it. Sitting in their chairs staring at screens, mindless, scarfing down cupcakes and pizza, slogging through cubicle jobs and corporate drudgery.

And for what?

To drown out the deep soul-calling to be what they are capable of.

Being an example of human possibility is not an easy task to take on. It takes strength and courage and love. Most of us don’t believe we have that in us.

BUT WE DO.

The time is NOW. THIS SECOND. More than ever we are at risk – but remember – most people are dying slowly every single day of their own terror – the internal terrorism of their own minds.

We need to fight that internal war more than ever. We need to conquer ourselves.

The more of us that finally listen and follow this call, the more the world will heal, the better it will be, and maybe we can finally deem human beings a species worth calling magnificent.

4 Reasons You Should Do Morning Pages to Improve Your life

4 Ways Morning Pages from The Artist's Way can Change your Life for the better

Morning Pages are the brainchild of Julia Cameron, who famously wrote The Artist’s Way back in 1992 – a book I have had in my home for well over a decade. Earlier this year, I felt a soft whisper in my mind – a call to finally read the book and do what it contained.

Morning Pages involve three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing every day when you wake up, before anything else, and you’re not allowed to stop, or edit, or really even think about what you’re writing. You spill your guts. You literally write whatever comes to mind. You can write “blah blah blah” until something else starts to form. It’s a release – you just open up and let it all fall on to paper.

Back in 1999 or so, I did start the course of the book, but didn’t get far, mostly because I was terrible at getting up early.

I was also put off by the use of the word “God” – even though it does not need to be read as a literal, religious term when it comes to the book. Once I got past this, the true worth of the book’s contents could shine. To allow one word or a basic concept to shroud the rest of it was absurd to me. (This was also something I struggled with in regards to the Anastasia series).

I did continue with Morning Pages for a while, but was deterred because I was so easily called to hit my snooze button, or I was more likely lured by the call of the Internet, still a fairly new addiction back then.

This year, however, I stuck with Morning Pages, and have, daily for months on end. I have completed about 8 weeks of the Artist’s Way and was so overwhelmed with ideas and inspiration (along with other things that stole my time) that the last few weeks are still something I need to finish.

The Morning Pages stuck, though, because they have been instrumental in my life changes.

They got me to start creating again. They lit a fire within me. They got me to quit my stupid job. They led me to see what was absolutely stupid in my life and what I needed to change.

They can do the same for you.

  1. They will show you your patterns.

When you start your day with writing about anything that comes to mind, and without thinking about it, patterns show up. When you find yourself writing about the same things over and over, you start to realize how monotonous and boring your life has become. You’ll start to see the same old complaints day in and day out. “My job sucks. I hate my life. My partner is annoying. I need to eat better. I feel sick again. I am depressed. I need to sleep more. I have a dry mouth. I woke up 10 times last night. I wish I could go on vacation. I don’t want to go to work. I’m sick of cleaning this bloody house.” Or whatever. On and on.

Our constant complaints, and what our subconscious spills out on the page consistently, comes to the forefront of our minds where we start to think constantly and consciously about them. We discover what things need to change. Then, we can start to write about alternatives.

       2. They will allow your subconscious to speak to you clearly.

We are so bombarded with information and distractions that it becomes almost impossible to listen to our inner voices, and to our hearts. Having 15-20 minutes of stream-of-consciousness writing allows us to FOCUS and also spill out what has been brewing without our even noticing, due to everything else going on. Then, those hidden gems are right in front of us, where we can see them start coming to life.

       3. They will inspire new life and new creations

Most people have their best ideas randomly, when they have no distractions. In the shower, walking, swimming, exercise, washing the dishes, meditation, the moments before falling asleep – singular tasks that don’t require a lot of thought – when your mind is allowed to wander. Often when people have these ideas, they’re fleeting because they are in a place where they do not have the means to write them down, and the ideas fly away like tiny birds, never to be seen again. With Morning Pages, they spill out ON paper, so even though you may not always want to re-read your pages, at least you know where those ideas are. They are made immortal, they can always be revisited. Thus, it will inspire action. You’ll have your beautiful ideas ready for you, and they can’t escape, they are caged, just waiting to be freed!

       4. They allow a fresh start to the day.

The pages are incredibly helpful for waking up. I’ve often started them while groggy, only to be wide awake upon finishing. On days where I have woken in a melancholy state, I have worked through it on paper and end up feeling hopeful. The days where I haven’t wanted to do them have been the more beneficial. I’ve had the most insight, and the most positive effect.

I highly encourage you to at least try this practice, even if you don’t go through the whole Artist’s Way course (which I do recommend doing()! Try it for at least a month and see what changes happen for you.

If none do…practice the pages for longer. I promise, you can expect great things to occur.

How to Stick to Your Goals and Become Amazing

While I was on the ferry home to Victoria from Vancouver, I was in my car and thinking about how “off” I got when I was not in my regular routine and visiting my family. How I, along with so many people, allow themselves to cheat or push things aside that are important to them when they go “away” – but you are not “away.” You are still in your body, you still have your mind, you still have all the same dreams and desires you had before – don’t neglect them.

When I go to Vancouver, I start visiting all these raw and vegan food places I “miss” and binge on things that I know are not great for me (though to everyone else they’d be ridiculously healthy – but for me, I feel the difference). Funny thing is that I didn’t even enjoy many of those things. I started to neglect the workout regime I’ve been very dedicated to for the last 2 months – luckily I did a little bit, but when I was sitting in my car thinking about it, really I could have done everything normally, I just made excuses. I wasn’t going on “vacation” and even if I was, I wouldn’t go “away” to escape from my freaking goals. Going “away” is to visit people, see new places, escape from work – NOT to neglect what is important to you.

And so I decided, along with the word “tenacious,” that I wanted to be able to describe myself as “dedicated.” Similar, yes, but decidedly different. Next time I go to visit the mainland, or anywhere, I will know to factor in EVERYTHING that is important to me that I do regularly, and to not skip it or sabotage it just because I make the excuse of being AWAY.

So, what are you? How could you be defined? How do you WANT to be defined? What words would you like to describe yourself by? Start calling yourself those things and you will become them.

What are you dedicated to? As you can see, I have neglected writing in my blog for a couple of weeks – I consciously made that decision, as I was starting to rebel against the schedule I set for myself. I do well with guidelines, but not strict rules. However, I have neglected writing in general, which to me is just sacrilege. Even if I am not writing here, I must write. Daily. And so I dedicate myself.

I dedicate myself fully to writing, to raw foods, and to fitness. I dedicate myself to my Ninjutsu practice. I dedicate myself to animal welfare and preserving the planet as much as I can. Everything on my list are things I dedicate myself to DAILY or at least weekly. Having this reminder to look at every day is paramount to my success. It’s so easy to forget goals and things that make us better people – we all want to be the best versions of ourselves. It’s stupid to envy others and want to be them – why not be the best YOU? Have you even tried that?

All of those adjectives I wrote…I already am, or am becoming. Always have things to strive for. I love myself as is, but I want to become better and better. Why wouldn’t I? Or you? So many people give up – “I’m too old” or “I’m too fat” or “I’m too boring.” What you tell yourself you are, you are. Tell yourself something different. Make it something you can BELIEVE, though. Even if you are a couch potato, you can say “I am athletic” because you actually are – you just have to wake that part of yourself UP. Your body has always been athletic, but you have to use it in that way! You have always been healthy, but you have to give your body the right conditions to thrive in! Allow it to heal! You have to do the work. This is sort of like affirmations, but not. You really have to find that part of yourself that can believe what you are saying. You’re not going to believe you are something if you aren’t that way IN THAT MOMENT, so choose your words carefully. Find a way to believe it. Dig deep, question everything. Find the truth in what you are saying.

You are worthy and you are capable. You are resilient. Get out there and live.

Doing Everything You Want to Do

How great would it be to be able to say when you die, “I did everything I wanted to do!”?

This is the statement you will want to make when  you’re dying. Not: “Did I make enough money?” or “Was I skinny enough?” or “Did I work hard enough?” or “Did I watch enough TV, browse enough on Tumblr, and play enough World of Warcraft??”

No. You’re going to wish you did all the shit you REALLY wanted to do. The stuff your soul wanted you to do. The stuff you resisted because it was too hard, too much effort, too scary, too uncomfortable, too “unrealistic,” and not an easy, guaranteed success.

If you talk to elderly people, so many of them have deep regrets. They regret not eating better, being more active, spending time with loved ones, not going after their dreams, working too hard, and on and on.

Don’t be one of those people. Do things, even if you suck. You will get better. I do stuff I suck at ALL the time. And I get frustrated! But I keep going, because I know with enough time and effort, I will improve. So will you.

I don’t care how old you are, how sick you are, or where you live, what your gender is – you can do whatever you want – but only if you BELIEVE  you can. Don’t squander your time with bullshit. It’s just BULLSHIT.

If you believe you can’t do something, you are right. You won’t even try. That is the difference between you and everyone who does the things they want to do. The difference is passion, consistent action, and belief in one’s self. That is it.

If your true passions are video games and TV, fine. Delve into them beneath the surface level. Make sure they are TRUE passions, and not just stuff you do cuz they’re “fun” or a way to entertain yourself mindlessly. If you have deeper dreams and goals, don’t ignore them. Don’t mask them with pointless junk. Don’t distract yourself.

I feel like I repeat myself a lot on this blog, but you know what? This sort of thing NEEDS repeating, because people WASTE THEIR FUCKING LIVES, ALL THE TIME.

It’s sad. I hate seeing it. I want to push you. I want to inspire you. I want to set fire to your soul. I want to see you create and experience the beautiful things that can exist in your life.

You are going to die, and it’s the best thing that can ever happen to you – because once you realize this fact, you may just do the most you can with your LIFE.

My Personal List of Dreams and Goals

Me in Hawaii, 2010

I love reading other people’s goals and fantasies, especially if they are taking steps to achieve them. Why have dreams and aspirations at all, if not to have something to strive for, to live for?

Here is an incomplete list of things I want to do and accomplish while I am alive.  I am taking steps to do all of them, these are not just fantasies.

I’d love to hear yours, too.

+ Travel to every continent, and every country possible
+ Write my series of novels (and more books)
+ Have a great community of friends around the world who I connect with via this blog and elsewhere
+ Have several rescued dogs
+ Learn to ride a motorcycle
+ Age beautifully
+ Be in a band and make music
+ Stay healthy until I am old and rainbow (not grey! When my hair is white you better believe it’s getting dyed crazy colours – I would do it now if it wasn’t so damaged – though white hair is pretty bad-ass, too – no short grey hair for me).
+ Help other people become healthier
+ Get my black belt (and higher) in Ninjutsu
+ Later when this happens, I want to teach other people to defend themselves, especially girls, and have a dojo with my partner
+ Get so fit it baffles people (and myself)
+ Ride barrels on my surfboard (this one is gonna be tricky but it’s still really my #1 desire)
+ Work for myself forever and be financially independent and successful on my own terms
+ Inspire others to get truly healthy and make the most of their lives
+ Write and draw my graphic memoir from my 90s teenage years
+ Continually become more and more awesome
+ Have my own home and land with mega gardens
+ Travel across Canada
+ Watch a surf contest at Pipeline, in person
+ Various naughty things I’m not going to elaborate on
+ Read thousands of books
+ Hike many long trails
+ Liberate some helpless creatures
+ Go to Burning Mam
+ Connect with the people who inspire me the most
+ Only spend time with people who add positivity and joy to my life
+ Be kind and loving, but fierce and relentless
+ Give a shit about things that MATTER, and ignore the bullshit

I have been working for many years on crafting a life that allows me to do what I want.

If you don’t have a list you refer to often, you will melt into the mediocrity of basic existence. Don’t just exist. LIVE.

Please share yours in the comments or on Facebook 🙂

What Are You Going to Do Otherwise?

A huge passion of mine is ninjutsu, which I do three times a week. On Monday I felt a bit resistant towards going. Throughout the day leading up to the hour-long drive to class, I fought against it – and then the best question ever came into my mind!

“What are you gonna do otherwise?”

My answer was, “Probably play on my computer or something.”

I said back to myself, “Is that going to make you a better ninja?”

I smirked and replied, “No….”

Very effective. Next time you are resistant to something you know you WANT to do (not should do), ask yourself that question.

Don’t wanna go to the gym? What would you be doing instead? Watching TV? Is that going to get you the body you want? Are Ross and Rachel gonna rip your abs and blast your fat? Nuh uh.

Don’t feel like working on your novel? What are you gonna do? Read Cracked and Buzzfeed? Are you insane? Open your flipping MS Word and type, bitch!

Don’t feel like practicing your oboe? Let me guess…you’d rather check out what OTHER people are doing on Facebook.

Sitting around and wishing for stuff is gonna get you nowhere. We have limited time on this plane of existence. You need take whatever steps possible to get you to where you want to be. Enjoy each step. Just because steps are small do not mean you should brush them off and fill up your time with meaningless junk. You can do that if you want, but do the important things FIRST. The more little steps you take, the closer you will be, the better you will be, the more you will be making of your life. Everything large is made of something small.

Tonight I’m going to class again. I usually want to go, but I always go regardless of how I feel, and I am ALWAYS glad I do. You will be glad you take your steps, too. But DO them.

Is This Leading Me to Who I Want to Be?

Short analogy:

I’ve had this habit since I was a kid: every time I go to throw something away, I ask if I can recycle it, in any capacity. I hate throwing things “away.” Almost everything can be recycled or composted. This is a pretty simple habit to get into – just ask yourself EVERY time before you throw something in the garbage, “Does this need to go in the GARBAGE, or can it go somewhere else?”

I realized that it is astonishingly helpful asking yourself before every ACTION (or inaction) you take, “Is this going to lead me to who I want to be?”

Every mouthful you take, everything you buy, all the time you waste online, every moment you spend playing a video game or reading Buzzfeed or watching reruns of shows you’ve already seen 10 times – seriously. And then you say “I have no time.” YOU DO have time.

YOU DO have focus. YOU DO have willpower. It is all about having focus. If you have no idea what you want to be and WHY, then you will have no reason to do anything, really.

“To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities.” – Bruce Lee

Life is not  just something that happens to you, it is the other way around. You are not meant to find yourself, you are meant to CREATE yourself, and creation doesn’t just happen, it takes dedication and decision. You must be tenacious.

So my challenge to you, is to figure out what the hell you want to BE. Then ask yourself, with every movement, and every decision, if that is helping you become who you picture yourself as. Do the work.

“It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.”

“If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.” – Bruce Lee

What to be a writer? Then write. Is spending 20 minutes on Twitter helping you become a writer? No? If you have writer’s block, read about writing. Write anything, free-flow. Don’t even think.

Want to be a martial artist? Is it helping you to shop for shoes when you already have 50 pairs? Or to jam Doritos in your mouth while watching Season 4 of Friends…again? Is it helping you train by buying lots of gear you don’t really need so you can LOOK the part? Or should you be training, or strengthening your body? Stretching? What else can you do instead that would supplement your interest, and make you BETTER?

Want to be a musician? Are you spending lots of time downloading new music and dancing around your living room? Or are you practicing your instrument at any given moment, writing lyrics, and advertising and recruiting band members, learning music programs on your computer, or networking with other musicians?

I can go on and on. Every moment can be utilized. Every bite you put into your mouth. Want a better body? To lose weight? First ask yourself WHY? Every time you eat say, “Is this helping me lose weight? Or is it me facing resistance? Am I feeding my addiction, or feeding my body what it NEEDS?” This is pretty simplistic thinking, but if we can train ourselves to ask ourselves this every time we do something, like I did with my garbage, we will train ourselves to make the most of our lives and move in the directions we want to go.

Are you overweight, obese, and spending hours online every day? How about you spend those hours learning about nutrition, and training your body? You can start ANYWHERE. With a walk, with a few repetitions of weights. With a huge fruit smoothie every morning. There are SO MANY steps you can take, even small ones – but don’t think small forever, THINK BIG. You are capable of SO MUCH MORE than you realize. Push yourself. If you have to take small steps at first, that’s okay, but your dreams are just outside of your comfort zone.

(Secret: Outside of your comfort zone is actually thrilling and the most confidence building place you can ever be – so if you are low in self-confidence, regularly push yourself out of your comfort zone, in the direction of your dreams).

EVERYONE  has dreams, or they DID and just forgot. DON’T FORGET what they are.

Ask yourself WHY? WHY do you want to lose weight? To be healthier? WHY? So you can do something athletic? So you can be sexy? WHY? So you can attract a partner? WHY? So you can be loved? You know what is infinitely better? Loving yourself enough to go after something you WANT TO DO. That will give you confidence over anyone else paying attention to you. Do it for YOU, and you alone.

Start now, with whatever you have. Once you are on the path, better tools will show up. It is magnetic. You will meet people and find things to help you along, it is the way of the universe, and the way the brain works. Get on the path, and make every moment count!

(If you can’t tell, I’ve been reading a lot of Bruce Lee stuff lately, heh!)
