Simple Steps to Becoming More Awesome

Now, first off, you are awesome already, you may just not realize it. You have just been buried under a lifetime of other people’s opinions and typical societal expectations making you think otherwise.

I don’t want to feed you a bunch of cliches because there are enough of them out there. I want to connect with other people who are completely committed to being amazing humans! Let’s face it, the majority of people are boring, complacent, and want to live in a shroud of normalcy.  No thanks.

If you’re reading this, I sincerely hope you are not like this, and that you want to be the raddest person possible, and not to be unique or better than anyone else, but simply to have a RIOT of a time while you are alive. Most people squander their time on earth. Don’t!


So are you totally baffled on how to get out of your funk or stagnant existence? Here’s a few simple tips that have helped ME, and maybe they could spark something for you.

1. Create the most awesome character you can think of. Give them all the traits you think are amazing, and not superficial ones. Traits that make them the most kick-ass, bad-ass, wonderful being ever. Someone you’d endlessly want to read stories or watch movies about. That is likely the person you want to be.

2. Now that you’ve figured that out, take the smallest step possible towards it, RIGHT NOW. For instance, I have always wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle. I’ve loved riding on the backs of them since I was a young teenager, and the simplest step for me was to look up my local motor vehicle branch, go down and get the study guide. Bam. Free! My next simple step is to read it and make flash cards. The easiest first step is to look up the info and then immerse yourself in it. Don’t make anything more difficult than it has to be.

3. Dedicate your days to accomplishing everything you want. CREATE YOURSELF. (“You” may have been created by other people!) Arrange your life around your goals! You have the power to do this, not anyone else. Once you realize you are capable of so much more than you thought, your confidence will soar and you will be able to accomplish even more amazing shit, but you will only prove this to yourself by persistent action. It’s difficult, I know. I am crazy hard on myself, but it’s worth the effort.

The more awesome you become (in YOUR opinion) it will just keep spiraling up and and up and  up. It doesn’t matter if it takes years – everything worthwhile takes dedication, and desire. If you don’t really want it, you won’t do it. Don’t get to the end of your life and realize you’ve wasted it. Hell, I’m writing in this blog more often now just because I want to freaking write and reach out to other wicked beings. Set specific goals for particular days of the week and STICK to them no matter what (unless there is some emergency circumstance). What can you cut OUT of your life to make room for more of your DEEP desires?

We are so used to immediate gratification that any effort, even small, seems like too much work. Well fuck that – it’s time to…

4. Change your attitude and get creative. Do you admire negative people, self-conscious people, or people who just give up? Or do you look up to people who just deal with the shit of life, do what it takes, and figure out creative ways to get what they want, WITH INTEGRITY? Become someone who you’d look up to.

5. Don’t let anything stop you. Choose adjectives to describe yourself and repeat them to yourself all the time. Lately I keep telling myself I am tenacious. TENACIOUS. My new favourite word. That is definitely how I want to be, and the more I say it, the more I become it. I believe it! And I don’t just SAY it anymore, either, I DO things!

What Are You Going to Do Otherwise?

A huge passion of mine is ninjutsu, which I do three times a week. On Monday I felt a bit resistant towards going. Throughout the day leading up to the hour-long drive to class, I fought against it – and then the best question ever came into my mind!

“What are you gonna do otherwise?”

My answer was, “Probably play on my computer or something.”

I said back to myself, “Is that going to make you a better ninja?”

I smirked and replied, “No….”

Very effective. Next time you are resistant to something you know you WANT to do (not should do), ask yourself that question.

Don’t wanna go to the gym? What would you be doing instead? Watching TV? Is that going to get you the body you want? Are Ross and Rachel gonna rip your abs and blast your fat? Nuh uh.

Don’t feel like working on your novel? What are you gonna do? Read Cracked and Buzzfeed? Are you insane? Open your flipping MS Word and type, bitch!

Don’t feel like practicing your oboe? Let me guess…you’d rather check out what OTHER people are doing on Facebook.

Sitting around and wishing for stuff is gonna get you nowhere. We have limited time on this plane of existence. You need take whatever steps possible to get you to where you want to be. Enjoy each step. Just because steps are small do not mean you should brush them off and fill up your time with meaningless junk. You can do that if you want, but do the important things FIRST. The more little steps you take, the closer you will be, the better you will be, the more you will be making of your life. Everything large is made of something small.

Tonight I’m going to class again. I usually want to go, but I always go regardless of how I feel, and I am ALWAYS glad I do. You will be glad you take your steps, too. But DO them.

Is This Leading Me to Who I Want to Be?

Short analogy:

I’ve had this habit since I was a kid: every time I go to throw something away, I ask if I can recycle it, in any capacity. I hate throwing things “away.” Almost everything can be recycled or composted. This is a pretty simple habit to get into – just ask yourself EVERY time before you throw something in the garbage, “Does this need to go in the GARBAGE, or can it go somewhere else?”

I realized that it is astonishingly helpful asking yourself before every ACTION (or inaction) you take, “Is this going to lead me to who I want to be?”

Every mouthful you take, everything you buy, all the time you waste online, every moment you spend playing a video game or reading Buzzfeed or watching reruns of shows you’ve already seen 10 times – seriously. And then you say “I have no time.” YOU DO have time.

YOU DO have focus. YOU DO have willpower. It is all about having focus. If you have no idea what you want to be and WHY, then you will have no reason to do anything, really.

Life is not  just something that happens to you, it is the other way around. You are not meant to find yourself, you are meant to CREATE yourself, and creation doesn’t just happen, it takes dedication and decision. You must be tenacious.

So my challenge to you, is to figure out what the hell you want to BE. Then ask yourself, with every movement, and every decision, if that is helping you become who you picture yourself as. Do the work.

What to be a writer? Then write. Is spending 20 minutes on Twitter helping you become a writer? No? If you have writer’s block, read about writing. Write anything, free-flow. Don’t even think.

Want to be a martial artist? Is it helping you to shop for shoes when you already have 50 pairs? Or to jam Doritos in your mouth while watching Season 4 of Friends…again? Is it helping you train by buying lots of gear you don’t really need so you can LOOK the part? Or should you be training, or strengthening your body? Stretching? What else can you do instead that would supplement your interest, and make you BETTER?

Want to be a musician? Are you spending lots of time downloading new music and dancing around your living room? Or are you practicing your instrument at any given moment, writing lyrics, and advertising and recruiting band members, learning music programs on your computer, or networking with other musicians?

I can go on and on. Every moment can be utilized. Every bite you put into your mouth. Want a better body? To lose weight? First ask yourself WHY? Every time you eat say, “Is this helping me lose weight? Or is it me facing resistance? Am I feeding my addiction, or feeding my body what it NEEDS?” This is pretty simplistic thinking, but if we can train ourselves to ask ourselves this every time we do something, like I did with my garbage, we will train ourselves to make the most of our lives and move in the directions we want to go.

Are you overweight, obese, and spending hours online every day? How about you spend those hours learning about nutrition, and training your body? You can start ANYWHERE. With a walk, with a few repetitions of weights. With a huge fruit smoothie every morning. There are SO MANY steps you can take, even small ones – but don’t think small forever, THINK BIG. You are capable of SO MUCH MORE than you realize. Push yourself. If you have to take small steps at first, that’s okay, but your dreams are just outside of your comfort zone.

(Secret: Outside of your comfort zone is actually thrilling and the most confidence building place you can ever be – so if you are low in self-confidence, regularly push yourself out of your comfort zone, in the direction of your dreams).

EVERYONE  has dreams, or they DID and just forgot. DON’T FORGET what they are.

Ask yourself WHY? WHY do you want to lose weight? To be healthier? WHY? So you can do something athletic? So you can be sexy? WHY? So you can attract a partner? WHY? So you can be loved? You know what is infinitely better? Loving yourself enough to go after something you WANT TO DO. That will give you confidence over anyone else paying attention to you. Do it for YOU, and you alone.

Start now, with whatever you have. Once you are on the path, better tools will show up. It is magnetic. You will meet people and find things to help you along, it is the way of the universe, and the way the brain works. Get on the path, and make every moment count!
